The Dayton Art Institute Turns 90!

It’s hard to believe, but The Dayton Art Institute is turning 90 this year—an accomplishment in which we take great pride and hope to share with the Dayton community throughout the year.

Incorporated as the Dayton Museum of Arts in 1919, The Dayton Art Institute was founded by such luminaries as Julia Shaw Carnell, Edward A. Deeds, Charles Kettering, Robert and Frederick Patterson, and Frank M. Tait.

Since opening to the public in an elegant Monument Avenue mansion with a collection of three paintings, the museum has been embraced by the community and has grown substantially—occupying a masterpiece building with more than 26,000 works in its collection and presenting outstanding exhibitions and educational programs. As it has flourished, the museum remains committed to the vision of its founders that art is for all people.

As part of our anniversary events, we look forward to an exciting and diverse year of exhibitions, opening with MYTH, OBJECT AND THE ANIMAL, a stunning installation of glass by contemporary master William Morris.

This summer and fall, dual exhibitions showcase Dayton Art Institute collections that have achieved outstanding quality through nearly a century of extraordinary gifts and  strategic purchases. 90 TREASURES will highlight impressive works on view in our permanent collections galleries, selected by Chief Curator Will South, along with Alejandra Gimenez-Berger; Lisa Morrisette; Suman Shenoi; Charles Carroll; and Dominique Vasseur.

As well, Dr. South and his team are identifying our HIDDEN TREASURES for the special exhibition HELLO WORLD!. These wonderful works from many periods and places, some of which have not been on display for years or are new to our collections—will be installed to both contrast and make visual parallels between art works from diverse cultures.

As part of our 90th Anniversary celebration, other special 2009 exhibition offerings will share the career of Yellow Springs-based artist Robert Whitmore and showcase accomplishments of Dayton Art Institute school alumni.

To ensure that the entire community has an opportunity to enjoy our many offerings, admission to special exhibitions galleries will be FREE on the third Thursday of each month. And, of course, permanent collections and many programs are without charge to the public all the time.

All members are invited to come together for birthday cake when MYTH, OBJECT AND THE ANIMAL opens on February 19th. As well, please help us spread the word about special Vectren Just Jazz programming in honor of our anniversary year on first Thursdays from February through November, and look for special anniversary features at our upcoming Art Ball and Oktoberfest.

We hope you come often to enjoy the many exciting programs we have in store and extend a sincere THANK YOU to all of our valued members and sponsors for the support you have given The Dayton Art Institute. It is thanks to you that The Dayton Art Institute is a cherished community resource as it reaches 90!
